We can vouch upon the the fact that we were kids of a time when 'Inland-Letters', 'Telegrams','Money Orders' and 'Postcards ' used to like a breath of fresh air. The writing in those letters used to come alive relaying the whereabouts of the writer. A peon from the Post office usually in there brown uniform used to be the messenger and treated with so much respect. They were like ray of fresh sunshine for a mother whose son and daughter used to leave far away. #POSTCARDS #INLANDLETTER #WritingLetter #NarrationArt #WritingLetters
Since my family was big, where three of my uncles ( Father's brother) used to stay in different parts of India and one in America, we atleast used to receive a letter weekly from either of them. My youngest uncle used to send post cards mostly with pictures covering one side completely. The other side was divided into 2 parts. One part for writing the address. And in the remaining portion he used to write about himself addressing mostly to my grand mom. But there used to be at least one line about me without miss. I used to wait eagerly to hear my name being read out. That used to give me a feelings of deep pride whenever my name was being read out.
The inland letters used to be of sky blue color ( not sure about how they looks now). They had bigger space for writing. Must agree that letter writing was an essential art. Some people used to narrate the whole thing in such little space whereas for some even after filling up all the available spaces, it was difficult to introspect his perspective. And it used to really difficult to decipher writing of some relatives. Baba used to ask every one visiting our house to decipher that without fail and surprisingly every one used to read most of the letter differently.

We got the telephone in our house in 1991/92. That was not the telephone that they applied for in 1980's. Since Baba was doing the construction of High Court building, we got that from the ministry. The number of that telephone was 4744 ( later a 22 got added as prefix). Gradually, the number of letter coming to our house declined. There was a telephone directory that used to record telephone number of every one beside there name updated every year by BSNL.
Later , we got the actual telephone that our family applied for. The number of that was 2199 ( that later became 22-2199 and now 232-2199). We still have that number. Then came fax which was like another new wonder. We got the fist fax machine in our house around 2002. By 2002, letters became a rare occasion. When I moved to Bangalore for my studies in 2002, I still used to write letter to my parents. At least once a month. I remembered getting occasional letters from school friends from different colleges. Those letter used to made my day. I used to wait eagerly for those letters and birthday cards. Still now I have all those collected in my home. We used to share all the important happenings in our respective hostels with each other. Inspite of being so far , those letter used to bind us together. Those are seriously special moments and priceless treasures.
Gradually all of us got our own mobile and incoming became free making Letter a lost entity. Letters became emails with the onset of technology. Inland letters became e-mail and post card became message. And now we really living in the age of video chat. After giving up writing, we are forgetting the art of narration as video omits that requirement. Our brain lacks power of imagination as the we get to see people across the globe.
